ART | 40 | BASEL | Art Galleries

Cory Arcangel, Slater Bradley, Gert & Uwe Tobias, David Ratcliff, Dawn Mellor, Gardar Eide Einarsson, Ryan McGinley, Jakob Kolding, Pierre Bismuth, and Muntean/Rosenblum
June 10th – 14th 2009
83 Grand Street

Team gallery will participate in the Art Galleries section of Art | 40 | Basel. Our booth is located in Hall 2.1 and our stand number is B.3.

Our presentation will include a selection of brand new works by a number of gallery artists, with the primary focus being on the young American part of the roster — New Yorkers Slater Bradley, Ryan McGinley and Banks Violette and Los Angelino David Ratcliff. Additionally, we will show new works by Germany’s Gert & Uwe Tobias, Austria’s Muntean/Rosenblum, Norway’s Gardar Eide Einarsson, Denmark’s Jakob Kolding, Belgium’s Pierre Bismuth, and England’s Dawn Mellor.

Among the works which will premiere at Basel are a new Cory Arcangel Photoshop Graident. This is the third in the series – one is currently on view at the New Museum in the Younger Than Jesus exhibition and the other was recently acquired by the Museum of Modern Art. We will also show a selection of brand new photographs from Ryan McGinley’s last road trip across the United States. Forthcoming shows of his work include Alison Jacques in London, The Breeder in Athens, and Team in New York. This is the first public showing of images from this much anticipated new body of work.

Slater Bradley will be represented by one of his signature silver drawings. Bradley, however, will also debut new paintings from a series of works that represent, in a nearly photo-realist manner, the entire catalogue of Joy Division bootlegs. Rendered in oil paint over palladium leaf grounds, these pieces measure 12 x 12 inches square, the scale of the record albums themselves.

Gardar Eide Einarsson and David Ratcliff will show large-scale black and white abstractions, with the former also represented by new sculptures. Manufactured by a common sign company in New York’s Chinatown, Einarsson’s lightboxes debunk a contemporary art standard — the illuminated text object — through their clumsy, workmanlike construction and their stridently functional appropriated images.

Muntean/Rosenblum, working collaboratively out of Vienna, will debut a new large-scale painting in advance of the Fall solo show at Team. This is the first new work to have left their studio since their show last September at the Sammlung Essl. Arriving from Koln are three large woodcuts from the studio of Gert & Uwe Tobias. These new woodcuts represent the range of imagery that the Tobias Brothers have become known for, from movie posters to figuration and modernist abstraction.

British painter Dawn Mellor will follow up on her successful solo show at Zurich’s Migros Museum fur Gegenwartskunst with a showing of new portraits from her Vile Affections series. Over the next few months, her work will be included in group exhibitions in Amsterdam, Berlin, London, and Paris.
