Team Gallery is pleased to announce its participation in the 2014 edition of Art Los Angeles Contemporary. This marks our inaugural appearance at the fair. Our presentation will include works by Pierre Bismuth, Carina Brandes, Massimo Grimaldi, Ryan McGinley, Gert & Uwe Tobias and Daniel Turner.
Anticipating his upcoming May exhibition at the gallery, Daniel Turner has provided a substantial sculpture taking its form from an institutional counter-top. This work continues the artist's practice of isolating material and formal qualities of ephemera taken directly from his personal experience as a laborer.
Gert & Uwe Tobias contribute a woodblock print on canvas, scaled at 79 by 118 inches. The artwork sets graphic patterns, organic forms and ambiguous, amalgamated figures against a dark background, mingling rigid geometric and abstract modernism with popular symbols and narratives of figurative art history.
Pierre Bismuth will display a work from his Following the Right Hand of... series, for which he projects a film onto Plexiglas and painstakingly follows the movement of the lead actress' hand with a black marker. He then places the resultant drawing over the still image of the moment at which he stops the movie. This method inverts the action of masculine expressionist artists, granting the feminine subject the power to conduct the imprint, as well as rendering the artist “incidental.”
A work by Massimo Grimaldi consists of a pair of iPads, side-by-side, one displaying a slideshow of Google image results for "Natalie Portman," the other for "Kabul bomb." Rather than serving as a condemnation of Hollywood indifference, this work is concerned with generating unexpected formal similarities.
On view by Carina Brandes are two black and white photographs. The artist's first American gallery solo is currently installed in our 83 Grand Street space. These works employ the camera's timer function to strike a delicate balance of the carefully orchestrated and the unanticipated, and produce a powerful sense of the Unheimlich.
A recent Ryan McGinley picture comes from a body of work depicting models engaging with lush interior spaces -- a significant break from his practice of outdoor road-trip photography.
