Here are the Young Men

Slater Bradley
April 26th – May 25th 2002
83 Grand Street

Team will present a solo exhibition of new photographs, videos, and sculptures by Slater Bradley from the 26th of April through the 25th of May 2002. The gallery is located at 527 West 26th Street, between Tenth and Eleventh Avenues, on the ground floor.

Over the past two years, Slater Bradley has been much preoccupied with ghosts and doubles. This exhibition at Team is made up of works that see that preoccupation through to a state of tangible evidence. Working closely with his "doppelganger," — a close friend whose appearance is very much like that of the artist himself — Bradley has archived a fiction of his own existence.

The works on view are an existential travelogue in which the doppelganger travels through time and space, slipping free the constraints of life itself. Bradley's simple "recordings," whether on video or in photographs, mask an intricate conceptual, autobiographical project in which complex strategies force uncertainty to the surface. The location of Bradley's imaginary shifts from a graveyard to a train, from an actual world to a recreation of a false memory from the archives of Factory Records.

A sculptural work, made from casts of both Bradley and his doppelganger, anchors the installation. The two young men, one cast black, one cast white, are styled in the manner of Druids or Star Wars action figures, and presented as life-sized chess pieces — six foot tall pawns, standing on black and white marble squares.

This is Mr. Bradley’s third solo show at Team. During the past year, the 27 year-old artist has had one person shows at Galerie Yvon Lambert in Paris, at Arndt & Partner in Berlin, and at Art + Public in Geneva. His works have also been included in a number of prestigious group exhibitions throughout Europe including Casino 2001 at Ghent's Stedelijk Museum voor Actuele Kunst; Look Me in the Eyes at the Kunsthalle Fridericianum in Kassel; and In a Lonely Place at the National Museum of Film, Television and Photography in the United Kingdom.

Gallery hours are Tuesday through Saturday, 10am to 6pm. For further information and/or photographs, please call the gallery at 212.279.9219.
